Abstract

This study explores the role of Zakat in the socio-economic empowerment of Muslim communities in the UK. Using a descriptive research design based on secondary data from Zakat organizations, government statistics, and academic studies, the research assesses Zakat practices, identifies challenges, and proposes strategies for improvement. Key findings reveal that Zakat provides critical financial relief, with 70% of recipients achieving stability within six months. Additionally, Zakat-funded education and vocational training programs have reduced unemployment rates by 8% from 2018 to 2023. However, gaps remain in achieving long-term economic self-sufficiency due to a focus on short-term aid. Challenges include high administrative costs (20–25% of funds) and unequal distribution, particularly in rural areas. The study emphasizes the potential of Zakat as a tool for poverty alleviation and sustainable development when coupled with improved governance, strategic allocation, and technology integration. By framing the findings within the principles of Maqasid al-Shariah, the research highlights how Zakat aligns with broader goals of justice and equity in Islamic social finance. The study contributes to the growing discourse on Zakat’s modern applications and offers practical recommendations to enhance its impact on poverty reduction and socio-economic empowerment.

Author Biography

Abdul Karim Chy, Ulster University

I am a dedicated researcher in Islamic studies with a strong academic and spiritual foundation. My journey began at the Islamic University of Medina, where I completed a BA (Honors) in Islamic studies, immersing myself in the rich heritage of Islamic scholarship. This foundational education shaped my understanding of Islamic teachings and inspired me to pursue further academic research to bridge classical Islamic thought with contemporary issues affecting Muslim communities.

Continuing my academic journey, I earned both an MSc and an MPhil from Ulster University, where my research focused on “The Impact of Islamic Markets on Muslim Consumers in the United Kingdom.” My thesis examined how Islamic values influence consumer behavior, market preferences, and economic participation among British Muslims, aiming to provide insights into how Islamic principles can guide ethical and inclusive economic practices within multicultural societies. This research contributes to the growing field of Islamic economics and offers practical perspectives for businesses and policymakers looking to understand the unique needs of Muslim consumers.

In addition to my academic qualifications, I am also a Hafiz of the Quran, which has profoundly influenced my dedication to Islamic values and ethics. My commitment to both scholarship and spirituality enables me to engage deeply with research topics that intersect faith, economy, and community welfare, as I strive to contribute meaningfully to the development of knowledge and practices that benefit both Muslims and the broader society.
